Become a Campaign Volunteer

The Workers of England Union has been building its campaigning work.

We have researched issues, published articles, challenged decisions and started asking some difficult questions.

Now we want to take the next step and we want and need our members to be part of it. Are you interested?

We have reviewed and consolidated our campaigns into six major campaign groups. This will allow us to concentrate our efforts, produce better campaign material and give members the opportunity to become involved in the subjects that matter to them.

You don't have to become a Trade Union Representative or a Workplace Liaison Officer and you don't have to give up hours every week.

You can simply volunteer to help with a campaign that interests you.

You might help distribute a leaflet. You might have specialist knowledge we can use. You might help with research, provide information from your workplace, attend an event or simply help us spread the word.
Some people may want to do more. Others might only have a few hours to give.

It all helps and we appreciate your support

The Workers of England Six Campaign Groups

Where Could You Help?

Independent Trade Unionism

1. Independent Trade Unionism & Better Representation

What should good Trade Union representation actually look like?

Our work on facility time cost, political funding, Trade Union independence, and independent representation, Workplace Liaison Officers and recognition will continue.

We are asking important questions about who pays for Trade Union activity, where money goes and whether workers are receiving the independent, knowledgeable representation they deserve.

We also want to bring the Workers of England Union into more workplaces and support the development of our Workplace Liaison Officers.

To clarify:-

  • Trade Union Facility Time
  • Political Funding and Trade Union Independence
  • Better, Independent Trade Union Representation
  • Bring the Workers of England Union into Your Workplace
  • Workplace Liaison Officers
  • Value and Quality of Trade Union Representation
  • Transparency over Trade Union Funding and Facility Time

If independent Trade Unionism matters to you, help us campaign for it.

Freedom Democracy & Accountability

2. Freedom, Democracy & Accountability

Workers must be free to speak, organise and peacefully demonstrate.

Our recent work has looked at freedom of speech and the right to protest, while remembering the sacrifices made by working people throughout English Trade Union history. The ETUC is of vital importance.

We also want government and public bodies to be transparent about the decisions they make and the public money they spend. Workers across England Deserves a Voice and a parliament for England. It covers England's democratic representation, constitutional arrangements and the argument for an English Parliament.

Whatever British Government is in power, workers should have access to the information they need to understand and scrutinise decisions that affect them.

To Clarify:-

  • Free Speech / Freedom of Speech Without Fear
  • Right to Peaceful Protest and Demonstration
  • Opposing Digital ID
  • Fair Representation for England
  • A Parliament/Government for England
  • England Deserves a Voice
  • Government Transparency and Accountability
  • Protecting Access to Public Information

Freedom and accountability should never be taken for granted.

Jobs Industry & Economic Future

3. Jobs, Industry & England's Economic Future

Who owns our essential services matters? but also what matters is what happens after ownership changes?

We will continue looking at utilities, manufacturing, bringing jobs back, developing local skills and protecting important industries. We will highlight the importance of ‘Bringing Jobs Home. It covers bringing outsourced/offshored work back to England, supporting English manufacturing, procurement, supply chains and creating jobs and skills here.

We want to look beyond political slogans and provide members with useful information about what changes actually mean for workers.
Where is investment going? Are jobs being protected? Are apprenticeships and skills being developed? Are services improving? And are decisions benefiting workers and the communities they serve?

To Clarify:

  • An Economy That Works / Developing England's Economic Future
  • Bring Jobs Home / Returning Jobs to England
  • Local Skills, Local Job
  • Investing in the Future – Skills for Young People
  • Protecting Vital Industries
  • Utilities That Work
  • Reinvesting Utility Profits into Infrastructure and the Economy
  • Water That Works – Accountability, Enforcement, Protection
  • Ownership of Essential Industries
  • Students Across England – Tuition Fees
  • Apprenticeships and Training
  • Supporting English/British Manufacturing
  • Public Procurement and keeping economic activity within England/UK

Good industrial policy should ultimately mean good jobs and opportunities for working people.

Fairness for Workers & Taxpayers

4. Fairness for Workers & Taxpayers

Working people contribute through their taxes and should be entitled to ask where that money goes.
Our campaigns will continue examining British government spending, waste, bureaucracy, public-sector costs and whether England and its workers are receiving fair funding and value for money.

When systems fail, ordinary workers should not continually be expected to pick up the bill. Don't punish workers for a broken system and Fair funding for England.

That is why we will continue asking questions, looking at the figures and presenting the information so members can reach informed conclusions.

To Clarify:-

  • Don't Punish Workers for a Broken System
  • Fair Funding for Workers and Taxpayers in England
  • Fair Funding for England
  • Government Waste and Bureaucracy
  • Value for Taxpayers
  • Poor Planning and Underinvestment
  • Making Government Spending More Transparent
  • Policies that transfer the cost of systemic failures onto ordinary workers

Better Working Lives

5. Better Working Lives

Some of our most important campaigns begin with everyday experiences at work.

Pay. Job security. Work-life balance. Workplace safety. Bullying. Discrimination. Women's health. Pregnancy. Menopause. Period pain. Men’s health, Protection for frontline workers, part-time workers and a bank holiday for England
These can affect someone's working life enormously.

We want to hear from the people who understand these issues best. From our members experiencing them in real workplaces.

Tell us what employers are getting right.

Tell us what they are getting wrong.

And, most importantly, help us identify practical changes that could make working life better.

To Clarify:-

  • Fair Pay and Secure Work
  • A Living Wage for All
  • Regulating Zero-Hour Contracts
  • Better Work-Life Balance
  • More Bank Holidays for Workers in England
  • Stopping Violence Against Frontline Workers
  • Equality and Dignity at Work
  • Tackling Racism and Promoting Equality
  • Bullying and Harassment in the Workplace
  • Protecting the Rights of Pregnant Women at Work
  • Women's Health at Work
  • Toilet Facilities for Bus Drivers
  • Fair sickness-absence procedures
  • Reasonable workplace flexibility and adjustments

Your experience could become our next campaign.

Resilience Families & Communities

6. Resilience, Families & Communities

Our responsibilities to members do not always stop when they leave work.

We have also started looking at food security, emergency preparedness, disruption to essential services and the resilience of families and communities.

This isn't about frightening people.

It is about providing sensible information, looking at the evidence and helping members understand how they can prepare for unexpected events without unnecessary expense or panic.

To Clarify:-

  • Be Prepared but Not Panicked
  • Food Security
  • Protection of Energy and Essential-Service
  • Cost of Sensible Emergency Preparation
  • Practical Information for Workers and Their Families
  • Community Resilience

Good information helps people make their own decisions.

Don’t Just Read About Our Campaigns, please Become Part of One

We need volunteers.

These areas of campaigning are to group our campaigns together and there is room for members to become involved at whatever level suits them.

Please look through our campaigns and perhaps there is simply one campaign that you feel strongly about and want to support.

If so, please then tell us. You don't need previous campaigning experience.
You just need to be willing to help.
As our campaigns develop, we want to produce specific leaflets and information for each area, build small teams of interested members and make it easier for volunteers to contribute without taking on more than they can manage.

It is Our Trade Union. We are Members Together and they are Our Campaigns.

The Workers of England Union is an independent Trade Union.

That independence means we can concentrate on the people who matter most, Our members and working people.

But an effective Trade Union cannot simply be an office sending information out to members. It needs members sending ideas, experiences, information and support back in. If you have anything that is of interest to you please do not hesitate to tell us.
So this month we are asking you to do something.

Choose one of our six campaign areas, Contact the office by e-mail, text or phone and tell us what interests you and how you might be able to help. It could be one leaflet. One piece of research. One workplace issue. One hour of your time.

Small contributions from many members can build powerful campaigns.

Don't just carry your Workers of England Union membership card.
Help us campaign for the things that matter to working people.
