Bradford Bus Drivers to Strike

| W.E.U Admin | News
The Workers of England Union supports Unite’s actions and wishes all the best to the Bradford bus drivers in their dispute. No one should be bullied and harassed at work, and trade unions must stand together to protect jobs. We urge First to listen to the concerns of their drivers.
Union Endorsement and Solidarity
The Workers of England Union fully backs the decision of Unite members to strike and calls on the company to engage in meaningful dialogue. This show of solidarity highlights the importance of treating drivers with dignity and respect.
Details of the 48-Hour Strike
Bradford bus users will experience a 48-hour strike next week as 380 drivers at the First Bradford depot walk out in protest against alleged service cuts and daily harassment. Members of Unite voted overwhelmingly in favour of industrial action—89% for strike action and 93% for action short of a strike.
The dispute centers on the partial transfer of the 576 (Bradford–Halifax) service to the Halifax depot, which Unite claims threatens eight jobs. The company denies any job losses and insists the move balances staff duties after tender changes.
Union Demands for Quality Services
Unite regional officer Harriet Eisner criticised management for allowing services to “wither on the vine” over the past four years. Driver numbers have fallen from 470 to 380 during that period. The union demands:
- Maintenance of reliable bus services with top-quality, properly serviced vehicles
- Recruitment of new drivers to address current shortages
- Consultation on any job relocations to other towns
Company Response
Emma Taylor, Business Manager for First in Bradford, expressed disappointment at the planned strike, calling the action “completely unjustified.” She reassured Unite that:
- No jobs are at risk and the depot is not closing
- Investment and development plans are under way, aligned with the expanding local retail offer
- The Halifax reallocation was intended to protect jobs following tender losses
First also disputes allegations of bullying and harassment and will seek further details from the union.
BBC Report: Bradford First Bus Drivers to Strike from 27 April
The BBC confirms that drivers at First Bus in Bradford will begin their 48-hour strike from midnight on Monday, 27 April. Unite emphasises that although the action is inconvenient for thousands of users, it is crucial to secure good and reliable services and fair treatment for drivers.
