The Case Against Mandatory Digital ID [Pt 4]
The proposed Digital ID system threatens workers’ privacy, rights, and access to employment. Every WEU member can take action today:
1. Stay informed
Read WEU articles and updates on digital ID. Understand how it could affect your workplace, rights, and services. Knowledge is power.
2. Speak up
Contact your MP or local councillor. Explain why mandatory digital ID risks exclusion, surveillance, and loss of worker autonomy. Personal stories make the message stronger.
3. Share with colleagues
Talk to co-workers about the digital ID plans. Awareness across workplaces increases pressure on decision-makers.
4. Join campaigns
Participate and give support in WEU campaigns; collective action amplifies worker voices and demonstrates widespread opposition.
5. Protect your data
Be cautious with personal information online. Keep track of which services require ID and how your data is stored.
6. Demand transparency
Ask for clarity on implementation, safeguards, and redress mechanisms. The government must explain how it will protect workers from exclusion and surveillance.
7. Stay connected
Ask friends and family to sign up to the WEU website for articles and briefings. Receive regular WEU updates and step-by-step guidance on how we are lobbying, protesting, and demanding public consultations.
The digital ID may be pitched by the government as modernisation, but without accountability, it risks entrenching inequality and control. By taking action now, WEU members can defend privacy, protect access to work, and safeguard employment rights for everyone.
The Workers of England Union is working hard to stop Digital ID, and together, we can stop digital ID from becoming mandatory and protect workers’ freedoms across England.
