NEC National Exhibition Centre Cross-Industry Event 2026
Building Connections, Confronting Challenges, Strengthening Workers’ Voices across England
From 28 to 30 April, a major cross-industry trade event was held at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC), bringing together organisations, researchers, and practitioners from across a wide range of sectors.
The scale of the event reflected the breadth of modern industry, with a strong programme of lectures, seminars, and exhibitions focused on innovation, research, and emerging challenges. For the WEU, the purpose was clear, to listen, to learn, and to build meaningful connections that can strengthen the position of our members across a range of sectors.
Throughout the day, conversations focused not only on innovation and growth, but also on the practical challenges facing different industries. From workforce pressures to technological change and sustainability, there was a strong sense that many sectors are grappling with similar structural issues, even if they manifest in different ways. Just as importantly, there was a willingness among participants to explore solutions, whether through collaboration, new approaches to training, or better alignment between employers, workers, and policymakers or simply promoting their products.
The event provided a valuable opportunity to engage directly with those developing the future of their industries. It allowed the WEU to gather insights that go beyond reports and headlines, grounded instead in the lived experiences of businesses and workers alike.
These discussions will not be left on the day, over the coming months, the WEU will share key themes, ideas, and opportunities with members, helping to inform both workplace conversations and wider campaigning work.
There was also a clear sense of appreciation for the openness of those who contributed their time, research, and perspectives. Events like this demonstrate the importance of dialogue, particularly at a time when many industries are undergoing rapid change. By bringing people together in a shared space, it becomes possible to move beyond isolated concerns and towards collective understanding.
When discussing the event, it was noted how many business emphasised that the real value of the event lies not simply in attendance, but in action. The Workers of England Union is committed to turning these conversations into tangible outcomes for its members, strengthening networks, informing strategy, and ensuring that workers’ voices across England remain central to the future direction of industry.
