In February, the Security Industry Authority (SIA) announced changes to modernise the licensing system and streamline processes. Towards the end of 2015, the SIA will launch new online services that will improve information for applicants and businesses, speed up applications, and enhance service delivery.
For Individuals
Individuals applying for or renewing a licence will do so through a new self-service website. Key changes include:
- Online personal accounts for licence applicants and holders.
- Real-time application tracking so you can see where your application is in the process.
- Alerts informing applicants when their licence is granted and when it will expire.
- The ability to amend personal details and circumstances directly, without contacting the SIA.
- Online appeal process for refusals and suspensions.
- All licence renewals will be processed online only.
- Compatibility with the latest web browsers.
- Paper applications accepted only in exceptional circumstances.
First-time applicants must have their identification documents verified at a participating Post Office.
Employers applying or renewing on behalf of staff will see a different process depending on membership of the SIA’s Approved Contractor Scheme (ACS).
For All Organisations
Any organisation can pay licence fees on behalf of individuals once the applicant completes their online application. Key updates include:
- The bulk paper application service will no longer be available; guidance will be provided for bulk users.
- Improved company licence checker to verify licence statuses quickly.
For ACS Companies
ACS companies gain additional benefits through two new services: Licence Assist and Licence Management.
Licence Assist
- Companies can complete and pay for applications on behalf of staff.
- Automatic notifications when licences are granted.
- Individuals must maintain personal SIA accounts and have IDs checked at a Post Office.
Licence Management
- All benefits of Licence Assist.
- Faster applications by allowing companies to carry out and endorse identity checks without Post Office visits.
- Companies can update employees’ online details (e.g., changes of circumstances) on their behalf.
- Requires companies to meet set criteria and sign a legal agreement.
A small number of ACS companies will trial Licence Management in 2015, with wider availability in 2016.
