The Workers of England Union (WEU) applauds the hard work of Community, the trade union that played a crucial role in saving the Scunthorpe steelworks. We remain optimistic that the conditions of the deal will be met and finalised, as this £400 million agreement could preserve up to 4,000 jobs at the plant.

Tata Steel and Greybull Capital have signed an agreement to acquire the iconic Scunthorpe steelworks. This landmark deal ends two years of uncertainty for thousands of dedicated steelworkers.

Under the rescue package, Greybull will inject £400 million into the 2,000-acre site and rebrand the business as British Steel—a name synonymous with Scunthorpe until 1988. However, several key conditions must be satisfied before the transaction can be completed:

  • Transfer of existing contracts
  • Certain government approvals
  • Completion of financing arrangements to the satisfaction of all parties

To secure immediate savings of £9 million in the first year, a proposed pay cut—currently subject to a worker ballot—is on the table. This follows a one-year pay freeze, the removal of non-profit-related bonuses, and the scrapping of the final salary pension scheme agreed earlier.

Leadership Perspectives

Bimlendra Jha, Chief Executive of Tata’s Long Products Europe business, remarked:

“Today marks a significant milestone in the sale of the Long Products Europe business. This sale is the best possible outcome for employees who have worked relentlessly to ensure the business’s survival and helped make it attractive to a potential buyer.”

Marc Meyohas, one of Greybull’s three partners, added:

“We are delighted to have reached agreement for the acquisition. We believe this venture can become a strong business with a highly skilled workforce and great potential. We thank Tata Steel, the trade unions, and both the British and French governments for their essential support. Our focus now turns to completing the deal so the business can start its next chapter with confidence.”

Trade Union Reactions

Roy Rickhuss, General Secretary of Community, said:

“We welcome this major step forward towards a deal that will continue steelmaking in Scunthorpe and secure the future of the Long Products business across the UK. Greybull’s interest testifies to the skills, experience, and commitment of UK steelworkers. With the right investors, British steelmaking can thrive. Community’s independent experts at Syndex confirm that the transformation plan is robust and that Greybull has the capabilities to build a sustainable business.”

Martin Foster, Scunthorpe Convenor for Unite, added:

“This announcement brings us within touching distance of securing a future for steelmaking in Scunthorpe. Many workers have already lost their jobs, and those remaining are making significant sacrifices in pay and pensions. While Unite encourages members to support the deal, the government must now ensure that British steel can compete on a level playing field—through infrastructure projects like HS2 and defence contracts, as well as measures to tackle cheap imports and high energy costs.”

Next Steps and Outlook

With the transaction moving closer to completion, the focus now lies on:

  • Finalising ballots on revised pay and pension arrangements
  • Securing the necessary governmental and financial approvals
  • Implementing a robust transformation plan to build a sustainable future for British Steel

Should all conditions be satisfied, the Tata Steel Greybull deal will not only safeguard thousands of jobs but also send a powerful message that UK steelmaking remains a vital contributor to the national economy.
