New data from Markit’s August 1, 2016 manufacturing survey indicates a sustained downturn in UK manufacturing activity, accompanied by a rise in sector job losses. Stephen Morris, General Secretary of the Workers of England Union, highlighted the urgent need for government intervention.
Survey Results and Implications
According to the report:
- Manufacturing activity fell further, reflecting ongoing pressure across key industry segments.
- Employment levels in the sector decreased for the seventh straight month, signalling an acceleration in job losses.
- The decline began prior to the Brexit vote, but recent economic uncertainty has intensified the downturn.
Statement by the Workers of England Union
“The report of job losses in manufacturing is worrying as it shows a decrease in employment over several months. The decline was already occurring before the Brexit vote, but the government now needs to act decisively to relieve the pressure on the economy and ensure workers’ rights are protected. There is an urgent need to start organising international trade agreements,” said Stephen Morris.
“The government should not wait for new trade agreements, as the workforce in England and the rest of the UK needs an urgent package of public investment to keep manufacturing moving forward. This must include major new infrastructure projects that use local companies and employ local people.”
