Is Stopping an Employee From Flying a Flag Illegal

| W.E.U Admin | Workplace Wellbeing

It has been reported that some employers—such as Royal Mail and Wetherspoon’s—have instructed their employees not to fly their own national flags or show any other visible support for their national teams. This raises serious questions about whether such a policy amounts to a forcible suppression of national identity.

Equality Act 2010: Protection against National Origin Discrimination

Under the Equality Act 2010, discrimination on the grounds of national origin, nationality, or national identity is expressly prohibited. Any employer policy that prevents an employee from displaying their national flag or other symbols of cultural identity is likely to be unlawful. An employee who successfully brings a claim could be entitled to thousands of pounds in compensation.
