Why You Should Never Rely on a Workplace Trade Union Rep

If your livelihood is threatened by a disciplinary allegation, grievance or workplace dispute, why would you entrust your future to someone whose own wages are paid by the employer you need them to challenge?

That is the fundamental weakness of the workplace trade union representative system.

A workplace rep may be sincere, supportive and well intentioned. However, they remain an employee of the same organisation. They must continue working under its managers after your case has ended. Their income, working conditions, promotion prospects and workplace relationships may all be influenced by the people sitting across the table.
That is not genuine independence. It is a built-in conflict of interest.

Can They Really Challenge the Employer?

Your workplace representative may need to accuse management of unfairness, expose a flawed investigation, challenge inaccurate evidence or argue that employment procedures have not been followed. Can somebody employed within that organisation always do this without fear or hesitation?

Even an honest workplace rep may soften their language, avoid confronting a senior manager or accept an inadequate outcome because they know they must return to the workplace afterwards or if they are a full-time workplace rep, they would return to working alongside those managers.

It must be remembered that it is the member that carries the consequences. The workplace rep does not lose your wages, your professional reputation or your career if the case goes wrong. So why would the large Labour Party funding Trade Unions use such a weak system of workplace reps?
