Employment Law Changes 2018


  • 30 March 2018

    Gender pay gap reporting for public sector employers Public sector employers must publish their first reports before this date (snapshot date: 31 March 2017).

  • 1 April 2018

    National Living Wage The National Living Wage for workers aged 25 and over increases to £7.83 per hour.

  • April 2018

    New statutory rates Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) rises to £92.05 per week, and SMP, SSP, ShPP and SAP increase to £145.18 per week.

  • 4 April 2018

    Gender pay gap reporting for private sector employers Private sector employers must publish their first reports before this date (snapshot date: 5 April 2017).

  • 6 April 2018

    Taxation of termination payments All notice pay is treated as earnings and subjected to tax and National Insurance contributions (pending final Finance Bill).

  • 25 May 2018

    General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) GDPR replaces existing data protection laws. For more on data protection changes, see our Employment Law Update 2017–18.

  • June 2018

    EU Trade Secrets Directive Introduces an EU-wide definition of “trade secret” and protections against unlawful acquisition, use or disclosure.

    Taxation of termination payments Employers become liable for employer’s National Insurance contributions on termination payments above £30,000.
